Delhi ranks among the worst cities in the world for women, tops list in sexual attacks
India’s capital is one of the worst megacities in the world when it comes to the safety of women, a survey by the Thomson Reuters Foundation has revealed.
The organisation asked was conducting a poll where it asked experts which of the world’s megacities are safe for women and which cities can do more to make sure its women do not face sexual violence and harassment and other harmful cultural practices and make sure that they have equal access to healthcare, finance and education.
The survey was conducted in 19 of the world's biggest megacities (as ranked by the United Nations) between June and July 2017.
Delhi ranks fourth after Cairo, Karachi and Kinshasa (Congo). Delhi and Sao Paolo have emerged as the worst cities when it comes to sexual harassment. Tokyo is seen as the safest city for women in terms of risks of sexual violence and Karachi is considered safer than Delhi when it comes to sexual violence.
Delhi also lagged in third place from the bottom when it came to women's access to economic resources, such as education, ownership of land or other forms of property, and financial services like bank accounts. London, on the other hand, came out top on that issue.
The access women in Delhi have to healthcare, including control over their reproductive health and maternal mortality, was also poor. Delhi again came fifth from the bottom, worse than Lagos, whereas London topped the list.
The survey, the results of which were released on Monday, was conducted online and by telephone with 20 experts in each city compiled from a database of women rights' experts. Those interviewed included academics, non-government organisations, healthcare staff, policy-makers, and social commentators.
