In urban India, 1 in 3 men, half the women obese
Oneself third to one half of urban Indian men and women are suffering from obesity-related problems and one in every three city males and females has hypertension.
The first study on diet and nutritional status of urban population in India and the prevalence of non-communicable diseases among them has also shown child malnutrition to be an equally urban phenomenon with UP posting the worst indicators.
Conducted by the National Institute of Nutrition under the Indian Council of Medical Research, the study covered 1.71 lakh urban Indians across 52, 577 households in 16 states to assess the diet and nutrition status of urban Indians. Investigators found cereals form bulk of the urban diet, but still not on a par with the medically recommended dietary intakes. “The consumption of cereals and millets in urban India is only 69.6 per cent of the recommended levels, intake of green leafy vegetables is as low as 59 per cent of the suggested diet and that of milk and milk products is 81 per cent. Fats and oils, on the other hand, are being consumed in excess of recommendations—intake being 159.5 per cent of the recommended levels,” findings show.
The average intake of macronutrients (energy and protein) and that of micronutrients (iron, thiamine and niacin) is much below the medically recommended levels in urban Indians. Vitamin C and folic acid intake is adequate.
“Major increase in the incidences of non-communicable diseases among urban Indians is attributed to nutrition transition, sedentary lifestyles and high risk behaviours. About 2.6 million Indians are predicted to die due to coronary heart disease, which constitutes 54.1 per cent of all coronary vascular diseases in India by 2020. In addition, the CHD in Indians has been shown to occur prematurely, at least a decade or two earlier than that in developed countries. The current study aims to assess the impact of diets on urban health and it’s the first such survey of urban India,” NIN experts say.
